Finding her niche
Not long after I adopted Missy, I saw an animal show at Sea World, but this one was made up mainly of dogs and cats. I remember one of the human performers explaining that all animals have talents and it was up to the people to figure out what it was. I struggled with that for almost four years until I found out about therapy animals. I realized I could volunteer AND my dog could go along. We passed our Delta evaluation in June 2006 and started right away. I found that, with a pocket full of treats, Missy and I could make hospital patients and school children feel good, or at least better. We did that for about five years. In 2008, she learned and started playing flyball. She was not fast, but was a solid teammate for three years and became a Flyball Master. Missy was my first dog, so I was not knowledgeable enough to push her into other things, but I do feel I found her talent and helped her live pretty well for the 11 years she was with me.
