Jules was a Good Boy Until the Very End
My sister Jamie adopted and named Jules in 2006. She couldn't have a dog in her new apartment so he moved in with my parents. When I would come home to Michigan, I'd take Jules running in the woods off leash and he would chase squirrels but would always pull up when I barked at him. He was so smart and happy and he was my favorite dog my family had ever owned. Jules decided he wanted to live the sweet SoCal life and my dad and I met up in Denver to hand him off. That was in 2011. Jules and I moved in with Kat and Corey and Toby the next year.
Jules loved hiking and playing Frisbee and 90's music. He loved getting on the couch when he was repeatedly told to stay down. Over the years, he snagged 3 full loaves of bread off of the counter, ate them and then blamed it all on Toby. He loved going hiking and jogging in the morning. He enjoyed going camping with Mom and Dad and campfire bacon was his FAVORITE. He hated water and all water-based activities, especially baths. He would do this little hop with his front feet when he wanted me to throw his Frisbee or pull on his toy with him. He would growl and be very very fierce when he played tug-o-war. Much fierce, very scary. :) And his snores would thunder so loudly that he would wake himself up.
He loved his little brother Toby and his Uncle and his Mom and he loved his walks with his Dad. One early morning I told him we had to get up and he yawned "WHAAAAT?" as clear as day. That became his voice. We all spoke for him: "Hello! I'm JULES!" In a sweet dumb voice. But he was not a dumb dog. He was voice controlled and gentle and chased hundreds of backyard squirrels but never caught a single one. He always kept trying though.
Jules and Toby had a singing band. It started when they heard neighborhood sirens where they would howl to try to match the pitch. Eventually they would have band practice whenever they thought Mom and Dads weren't around; Jules on the bass howl and Toby on the tenor chirp. They had plans for a Tour, but I think they were all bark.
Mostly, he loved his PackFamily and spending time together. He loved his various Uncles that would come play with him or he would see around the Neighborhood. He loved meeting new people and licking little kids in the face. Jules loved naps on the porch with his Dad and would lay his head on Dad's stomach. That was the best.
Jules was a mid-sized dog. Around 60 lbs. A perfect Jules size. But the hole he has left in our home and hearts feels immense and cavernous. He was a good boy, such a good boy until the very end.
We miss you, Jules. We will play frisbee again. I love you.
