After being without a dog for three years, we were ready for a dog for our family. Our children were six and three years old, so we decided on a small dog. I found a local Shetland Sheepdog breeder who had a new litter, so we decided to choose one of her puppies.
We visited the puppies at three weeks of age, and were immediately drawn to "Rex", a very sweet puppy. We visited again at five weeks of age, and confirmed that Rex was the dog for us. A few weeks later, we brought him home and named him Duffy. Duffy was fun-loving, obedient (mostly) , calm and just great company. He enjoyed socializing with people of all ages, and excelled with timid children. By the time he was two years old, the thought of therapy work was in my mind, but I was too busy with my kids.
Duffy became a Delta dog at the age of six, working with seniors, children in reading programs, troubled teens and hospital patients. He had a number of medical problems himself, including hereditary hemophilia and cancer, but it didn't stop him from visiting those who needed his calm presence.
Duffy was a rare dog, and will be greatly missed.
