Guestbook for Gus

Posted By Pam Becker on Oct 14 2013

Gus was my dog's mentor. They knew when they met him that he was the one to emulate. We love you Gus and Abby is waiting for you over the Rainbow Bridge. You were a wonderful, loving companion and we know that every life you touched was better because of that interaction. I know that I am. With the deepest love to you and your human and furry family....

I had the honor of working with Gus at Saddleback Hospital. He and Joe were wonderful with the patients and a dependable team. Our hearts are saddened by his loss.

Gus I remember the call from Castaic Shelter to come see a black tri male they had just picked up. Knowing Castaic Shelter was a high kill shelter I knew I had to get there quickly. I took a long lunch hour from my job in Arcadia and drove to Castaic to see this boy. He stole my heart immediately and my search was on for foster care. I called Joe, he said yes he was up for a foster, and Gus’s new life began. Unfortunately Gus was injured with two front shoulders. Joe, myself and Dr. James Tapper started our campaign to get donations for Gus’s surgery. Gus went to many fund raisers with me, Joe took him everywhere and met lots of people who wanted him to get well. All Care Animal Hospital in Fountain Valley agreed to do the surgery at a discount. Gus spent his recovery with Dr. Tapper and myself until he was ready to go to Joe’s home. Well as you all know Joe was his forever Dad and Birdie and Mulligan his new sister and brother. We held a party for all donors in Gus’s honor at Joe’s home in Mission Viejo. It was attend by many special people and supporters of Gus’s. An amazing celebration for an amazing dog. From the beginning of his journey into rescue to Joe, Gus grabbed everyone’s heart. He was one of a kind and his loyalty to Joe started the very first day they met in the parking lot of Orange County Shelter for the transport hand off. Rest in Peace Gus, you have many friends at the Bridge. With love, Madeline

I am so sad to hear of Gus leaving this world - I have never seen a better Pet Therapy team than Joe and Gus ... They could communicate silently, zero in on what was best for the patient, and do it ... Even if it wasn't something Gus had done before, Joe had amazing confidence that Gus could figure out what was the best move, if he gave him time to figure it out in his own, brilliant Canine way. Joe & Gus (and Pam & Abby) were the inspirational beings that energized me to pursue becoming a Pet Partners Team with my Jenna - I will always be indebted to them for their persistence to develop programs and overcome resistance for the good of people of all ages so they can benefit from the special love and comfort provided by these incredible Therapy Dogs. They are a special breed: these dogs so very intelligent, so empathetic, so highly attuned to their handlers, & so willing to do whatever is asked of them to help others - they are "old souls" and I have felt incredibly blessed to know & learn from Joe & Gus. Joe and Gus were such a blessing to so many people over the years - I believe Gus is playing with Mulligan over the rainbow and waiting for his chance to rejoin his beloved Joe. With much sadness, Janell Keider and Jenna
