Nestle Recalls Canned Cat Food
Nestle SA is voluntarily recalling one lot of canned cat food after a product sample by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration indicated a low level of thiamine, or vitamin B1.
The recall is in response to one consumer complaint received by the FDA, though the company said it has not received any other complaints of thiamine-related or other health issues related to the product.
The recall applies to Nestle Purina PetCare’s Purina Veterinary Diets OM Overweight Management canned cat food with a “best by” date of June 2013 and the production code 11721159. The lot was distributed to veterinary clinics between June 2011 and May 2012 throughout the U.S. and Canada and was not sold in retail stores.
Nestle Purina said cats fed this lot exclusively for several weeks may be at risk for developing a deficiency of thiamine, which is an essential vitamin for cats.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – May 8, 2012 – Solid Gold Health Products for Pets, Inc., El Cajon, California, announced a voluntary recall of one batch of WolfCub Large Breed Puppy Food and one batch of Solid Gold WolfKing Large Breed Adult Dog, both with a Best Before date of December 30, 2012, and an “X” in the 11th digit of the date code.
Solid Gold is voluntarily recalling the products below, distributed in the United States and Canada. This voluntary recall is being done out of an abundance of caution as these products were produced at the facility that has been linked to recent recalls of Diamond brand pet foods due to potential Salmonella contamination.
Pets with Salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If left untreated, pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
Individuals handling dry pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product. People who believe they may have been exposed to Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. According to the Centers for Disease Control, people who are more likely to be affected by Salmonella include infants, children younger than 5 years old, organ transplant patients, people with HIV/AIDS and people receiving treatment for cancer.

Dear Valued Retailer, A few brands announced a recall late Friday, May 4th 2012. We are starting to get information in and will pass along updates and information as it becomes available. The information below is preliminary and each one of the brands below is preparing factual statements and processes and will be loading them on their individual web sites. Once they have finalized this information, we will also be loading it onto our web site under the forms button for your reference.

It is with regret that we are reporting a voluntary recall on a limited production run of CANIDAE dry dog food produced out of the Diamond Pet Foods South Carolina plant. Even though not one of our products have been tested positive for Salmonella, it is out of pure precaution that this product is being removed from the market place. We are working diligently to make this process as seamless as possible for you, our retailers and consumers.
Although there have been no animal or human illnesses related to Canidae Pet Food, and the product has not tested positive for Salmonella, the company has voluntarily initiated this recall out of caution to ensure the health and safety of consumers and their pets.

Diamond Pet Foods today announced that it is expanding a voluntary recall to include batches of nine brands of dry pet food formulas manufactured between December 9, 2011 and April 7, 2012 due to potential Salmonella contamination.
In April 2012, Diamond Pet Foods initiated three voluntary recalls of Diamond manufactured dry dog food. Although none of the additional products being recalled have tested positive for Salmonella, the company is pulling them from store shelves as a precaution. Diamond Pet Foods is coordinating efforts with federal and state health and regulatory agencies and decided to independently expand the recall to ensure the safety and well-being of customers and their pets.
The company stated: “We have taken corrective actions at our Gaston, S.C., facility and voluntarily expanded the recall out of concern for our customers and their pets.”

A third dry dog food product is being voluntarily recalled by Diamond Pet Foods due to salmonella concerns.
Diamond Puppy Formula dry dog food, like the other two dry dog food products, was made at the company’s South Carolina plant, which has been temporarily shut down.
The latest recall involves its Diamond Puppy Formula dry dog food. No canine illnesses have been reported.
The product was distributed to customers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

Background Information
On April 8, 2012, Diamond Pet Foods temporarily suspended delivery of all products made at its Gaston, S.C., plant. The company took this precautionary step immediately upon discovering a quality issue when it voluntary recalled on April 6, 2012, a limited number of batches of its Diamond Naturals Lamb Meal & Rice dry dog food produced at the plant, which was the potential that the product might be contaminated with Salmonella.

Man sues Nestle Purina and Wal-Mart over dog treats from China
Pet owner Dennis Adkins has filed a lawsuit against Nestle Purina and Wal-Mart following the death of his 9-year-old Pomeranian, Cleo, who became ill and died after eating one Waggin’ Train “Yam Good” chicken-wrapped treat per day over a three-day period. Adkins has also requested that a class be initiated for other owners whose pets were affected. One of you great Independent Pet Store People out there sent me a ‘heads up’ that their Distributor would not be delivering any products made by Diamond Pet Food; though she received no explanation why. I called Diamond and was told…
Paraphrasing ‘In light of the recent Diamond Pet Food Recall, out of precaution Diamond is suspending delivery of all products made at the Diamond South Carolina facility until more information is available.’ Told to me by Julie, Diamond Pet Food Representative.
Julie did not have a list of Diamond manufactured foods made at the South Carolina Plant. She suggested if a pet owner has a question if the food was made at the South Carolina Diamond Pet Food plant, please contact the respective company.
