San Francisco – January 9, 2013 –

Milo’s Kitchen® today announced that it is voluntarily recalling its Chicken Jerky and Chicken Grillers home-style dog treats from retailer shelves nationally. No other Milo’s Kitchen® products are affected.

On Monday, New York State’s Department of Agriculture informed the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Company that trace amounts of residual antibiotics had been found in several lots of Milo’s Kitchen® Chicken Jerky. After consultation with the New York Department of Agriculture and FDA, the company decided to voluntarily recall Milo’s Kitchen® Chicken Jerky and Chicken Grillers, which are both sourced from the same chicken suppliers.

The use of antibiotics to keep chickens healthy and disease-free while raising them is standard practice in poultry production for both human and pet food. However, the antibiotics found in the products were unapproved and should not be present in the final food product.

Milo’s Kitchen® has a comprehensive safety testing program in place for its products from procurement through manufacturing and distribution. Part of that program involves extensive testing for a wide range of substances commonly used to ensure the health of chickens. However, Milo’s Kitchen® did not test for all of the specific antibiotics found by the New York Department of Agriculture.

“Pet safety and consumer confidence in our products are our top priorities,” said Rob Leibowitz, general manager, Pet Products. “While there is no known health risk, the presence of even trace amounts of these antibiotics does not meet our high quality standards. Therefore, today we decided to recall both products and asked retailers to remove the products from their shelves.

“Consumers who discard the treats will receive a full refund,” said Leibowitz. “We are committed to Milo’s Kitchen® and stand by our guarantee of complete consumer satisfaction.”

    • Hi Gary,
I’m glad the story shed some insight for you. However, please be aware that we are not the manufacturer, we are a non-profit just reporting on the story. AT the end of the post it gave you the following phone number to contact the manufacturer:

My puppy just ate his last chicken. I have been looking for a replacement bag for two days…before I got to Petsmart. At least they had notice hanging up about the recall. The other two stores, lost my business because they did not have what I wanted ( on top of the Milo’s Chicken)

Hi everybody my name is Debbie and I’m the proud owner of two goldendoodles and a cat. My pets diet and health are very important to me. I feed them all top quality food without grains. I want to tell you about a great company I purchase from that ships for free if orders are $49.00 & no tax. You can also get auto ship at a bigger discount. The name of the company is Chewy.com Their prices always beat the pet stores. Also our Pet Smart store will match their price dollar for dollar, they’ll look up the price if you ask. I always auto ship & you pick the dates for auto ship & if you need to change the date you just have to call & let them know. On auto ship the co. always sends an email reminder. With auto ship there’s a 15% additional discount, which is pretty cool. Pet Smart will also honor the 15% discount for you..Hope you try them because its really convenient & very affordable.

Please be thankful that your animals didn’t get sick like mine did. Immediately after ingesting the treats, my pomma poo got VERY sick~vomiting, stomach pain & digestion problems for days. After all the research I did on them, I felt blessed & fortunate that she didn’t have worse symptoms & that she was fortunate to survive. It makes me furious that certain companies get meat from China which has caused renal (kidney) failure & other illnesses resulting in canine deaths. Even USA companies have been shown & known to put dangerous & disgusting ingredients into dog food & treats including euthanized animals!

Walmart is not pulling them from the shelves; they just put them on the clearance rack. Unfortunately, I fell for that, and now have had both my dog and my father’s dog sick from eating just one package of four pieces over the span of three days. Anything related to Purina will no longer be brought into our homes, and believe me, I will read the packaging intil my eyes bleed to avoid anything that contains even “products” that are not USA made!

Are they the treats from China or is it all of then? Frys has them on the shelves made in USA?

          • The issue isn’t only if they are MADE in the USA, but where the protein is SOURCED. If they get the chicken from China and the chicken they get is diseased, then using bad chicken to make the treats in the USA isn’t any better.

Better to never purchase food or treats from a supermarket. Just your specialty pet retailers.

Would like to know how to get refunded for the treat when you throw out?

  3. Helen says:

I just have a question, will they be making more Milo’s chicken jerky? Our dog’s got one every night, They love them and would get excited when they knew they were going to get one. Please make them healthy for our dog.

  4. Keith Sparks says:

Well, here is another product that is made in China who are trying to poison American consumers. I will not use this product any longer.

    • Jeannine says:

      Keith,
I soooo agree with you. What is going on with China and dog treats? I have been calling MFG’s of dog products trying to get answers. All I’m told is dog food/treats are not the same as human food, THEY DO NOT HAVE to test dog food, nor do they have to let consumers know ANYTHING regarding ingredients. We “USA” LET THIS GO ON, pets are like our family how can this be happening? Question, have you or ANYONE found information about “WaggonTrain” chicken jerky treats? I believe my dogs are/were addicted to those! Thank you, and I am so glad I found this web site.

Do I need the receipt? Our bag is half empty. And when if ever will this problem be resolved?

  6. larry wimmer says:

I firmly believe that Milo’s Chicken Jerky killed my schnauzer. Who might i contact, involving a class-action lawsuit?

  7. jan says:

I saw someone posted that these products are made in China, but I thought they were made in the US. Also, is there any concern that other Milo’s products are affected? I have some chicken meatballs and am reluctant to feed any to my dog because of this recall. Thanks

Several years ago our vet recommended and sold Verbac C.E.T. Veggie Dents. Our dog loved them and has been eathing them since (3-4 years). But I have seen online warnings about this product in Australia, which has taken them off the market. Another site said, however, that they are made differently in Australia than in the U.S. There is much on the web about chicken jerky from China and the illness and death of many dogs and some cats. Should I continue to give my dog Verbac C.E.T. Veggie Dents? Thanks.

My neighbors lost their two labs from treats made with processed chicken. I have been avoiding any product with processed chicken listed as an ingredient. My Best Friend: Tyson, a Husky/Shepard mix, will not eat any dry dog food with CHICKEN in it. he will just leave it in his bowl. I stopped purchasing any product with Chicken listed as a flavor.
